Wikstrom Engineering provides annual inspections, testing and recertification for davit systems on commercial buildings across the United States.

Commercial Roof Davit System Testing, Inspection and Certification

Rooftop facade access safety starts with building tie-off anchorages and equipment such as davit systems (bases and arms), roof anchors, horizontal lifelines and other structural tie-off points. Workers use these to attach their harnesses, platforms, and safety equipment while accessing a building’s facade for maintenance, cleaning, or repair. Regulations and codes are put in place by OSHA and other regulating bodies to ensure those systems are in good working order and that they have enough redundancies in place to limit harm from unforeseen events.

Rooftop Davit System Testing Ensures Worker Safety & Limits Liability

To help our customers meet national and regional regulations and standards such as OSHA, ASME, & IWCA, Wikstrom Engineering Consulting offers testing and certification of your davit systems, roof anchors, and other tie-back anchors. Davit systems certification testing must be performed and documented every 10 years to meet minimum safety requirements. Many building owners have their davits tested every 5 years, however, due to heavy use, type of connection to the structure, exposure to extreme weather, lower risk tolerance, or to limit building liability. The 10-year timeline written into the regulations is often viewed as the minimum needed for safety and a 5-year testing cycle provides the highest confidence that davit arms and bases are safe for workers and gives peace of mind to those responsible for building and worker safety. Some davit systems are required to be tested every 5 years.

Falls are one of the leading causes of traumatic workplace injury in the USA. OSHA estimates that their 2017 fall protection requirements will prevent 29 fatalities and 5,842 lost-workday injuries every year.

Additional Certification Considerations

In addition to annual inspections, to meet OSHA tie off anchor requirements best practices you should have your building and equipment re-certified in the following situations:

  • When equipment is modified or removed from the structure
  • When your building is re-roofed or renovated
  • When the equipment shows excessive wear or damage
  • Periods not to exceed 10 years
